In an era of tightening budgets and an increasing need for creativity in fundraising, UWT became the first university in the nation to establish an office of full-time staff dedicated exclusively to signing up the institution to receive payouts from large corporate settlements.
The CASPRF was the brainchild of President Elver Tešanović, who proposed the idea in early 2013 after receiving an unsolicited check in the mail related to his purchase of a vacuum cleaner that was later found to have been misleadingly advertised.
Led by Shane Lozano, a UWT alumnus and former call taker for a law firm specializing in class action suits, the Fund has contributed over $13.77 to UWT academic programs to date, offsetting expenses ranging from graduate fellowships to faculty hiring. "Every dime we collect (and, on average, it's actually several per week) goes back to UWT academic support and making the Duck experience even better for our students," said Dean Kelly, Dean for Financial Affairs.
